All Your Carpooling Questions Answered Here

  • TreadShare takes your safety very seriously:

    • Driver’s license: we check that the driver’s license matches the information in their profile, and that there is insurance on the car. However, this is the driver's responsibility to check with their carrier that they have enough coverage for their passengers;

    • Background check: we encourage drivers to accept to be background checked (driving record, sex offender and criminal). Drivers who have been background checked show with the verified blue icon on their profile;

    • Reviews: drivers and passengers are encouraged to leave a review after each trip;

    • Stranded passengers: drivers are responsible for up to $100 per passenger in case of a no show that would leave a passenger stranded. If TreadShare is not able to charge the driver or if the driver is not considered at fault, TreadShare could refund each passenger for up to $100 for an alternative transportation mode. There will be an investigation and a decision will be made on a case by case basis, depending on the alternative transportation modes available and the qualifications to be considered as stranded:

      • Transportation alternatives should be considered in this order of priority: another TreadShare ride, public transportation, shared shuttle services, on demand taxi services (Uber/Lyft…);

      • Stranded passenger: to qualify, passengers must be stranded at a location that is not the location of their homes and friends/family’s homes. For example, the return trip from a resort to home;

    • Driver’s approval: passengers send a reservation request to Drivers, who have up to 24 hours to confirm. We recommend drivers to decline any passenger reservation requests made from profiles that do not have a clear picture;

    • Drivers and passengers are communicated their first and last names after reservations are made. For their safety, we strongly recommend that all carpoolers show their ID while entering the vehicle to check that they are traveling with the persons they booked the ride with;

    • TreadShare does its best to build a trusted carpool community but urges passengers and drivers to use discretion regarding their own safety.

  • TreadShare is a carpool app that does not imply a commercial activity, a revenue, nor profits for drivers. The app connects drivers and passengers heading in the same direction so that they can share a route together, as well as the various costs associated (gas, maintenance, tolls...).

  • The TreadShare app is free to download and use. The goal is to share the costs of driving between drivers and passengers, so passengers pay upfront for their seats on the app. Once the trip is completed, drivers receive the fares paid by passengers, minus a small service fee that allows us to operate.

    Prices are set to always remain below the IRS mileage rate, that sets the cost of driving (67 cents per mile in 2024). So that no driver can make a profit: TreadShare offers a solution to share the costs of driving only.

  • Very easily by providing a copy of your driver’s license and insurance. Download the app, create an account, and follow the steps. Drivers have the ability to be background checked (driving record + criminal + sex offender) through TreadShare for $19 (with a driver’s license from Colorado), for a more trusted profile within the app that will increase their chances to find passengers.

  • Simply create an account, complete your profile, and provide a payment method in order to reserve your seat upfront.

  • No, TreadShare is designed to be as flexible as possible. Passengers book one way at a time and can decide to come back to their starting point with another driver that meets their needs better.

  • Anywhere in Colorado as long as the distance is more than 23 miles (one way), or 5 miles if there is a ski resort on one end. Examples of trips allowed:

    Denver <-> Keystone

    Dillon <-> A-Basin

    Frisco <-> Copper Mountain

    Boulder <-> Eldora

    Denver <-> Boulder

    Colorado Springs <-> Denver

  • Under our Terms of Use, we require that drivers have a valid insurance policy that covers their use of TreadShare, including coverage for carpool riders.

    Auto insurance policies typically allow not-for-profit, cost-shared carpooling. TreadShare is designed to help riders and drivers share the cost of carpooling, and not for a driver to make a profit or to earn a salary. Reimbursements to the driver by the riders will always be less or equal to the cost of the particular drive, taking into account factors such as gas, wear and tear, and vehicle depreciation, determined by the IRS every year (67 cents per mile in 2024). TreadShare is not a transportation network company (“TNC”) or a rideshare company, which require additional insurance coverage.

    Drivers should review their personal auto policy to confirm that their insurance covers cost-shared carpooling. Below are some examples of the carpooling language used for standard auto insurance policies. Typically, policies have an exclusion denying coverage when a policyholder is driving for hire, but the policy will state that the exclusion does not apply to cost-shared carpooling.

    Note: Individual policies differ based on a variety of factors, so drivers should review their own policies to confirm coverage before using TreadShare.

  • Carpooling with TreadShare offers a new method of traveling within Colorado and Utah, more sustainable. It allows savings by sharing the cost of the drive (without implying profits for drivers), meeting like-minded people (and why not make new friends?) and of course decreasing traffic.

    Additionally, some ski resorts offer incentives to carpoolers with free or discounted parking. We will be working with ski resorts and local communities to offer more incentives.

  • This is at the driver’s discretion and is usually specified in the drive description posted by the driver on the app. Additionally, we encourage contacting the driver with the in-app chat function to confirm.

  • For passengers:

    Cancellation more than 24hrs before departure: passenger is refunded, minus the TreadShare’s service fee;

    Cancellation between 24hrs and 30 minutes before departure: passenger receives a 50% refund, minus the TreadShare’s service fee. Driver receives the other half;

    Cancellation less than 30 minutes before departure: no refund.

    For drivers:

    There are no passengers booked: drivers can cancel anytime;

    There are passengers booked: it is not allowed to cancel as your passengers could be left stranded. Drivers should only post drives that they are completely sure to do. If a driver still cancels a drive with passengers booked, TreadShare will decide on a case by case basis to suspend the driver's account;

    No show: driver can be held responsible for up to $100 per stranded passenger.

  • Every case is different: the driver could be driving very close to your location, or they would rather meet at a carpool lot. Please use the in-app chat function to setup a meeting point before the driver confirms your ride request.

  • In order to build a trustworthy carpooling community, we require that all profiles show a clear picture (no hat, helmet, sunglasses…) with their first and last names. The last name is only communicated to the driver/passenger after the reservation is made. For their safety, we strongly recommend that all carpoolers show their ID while entering the vehicle to check that they are traveling with the persons they booked the ride with. This is why the profile information needs to be accurate and clear. Additionally, drivers can decline reservations made from empty profiles.

  • Payouts are usually transferred to the driver’s Stripe account within 3 business days after the completion of the trip.

  • You can delete your account and all your user data from within the app. Go to the Settings tab, then “Account Settings”, then “Delete Account”.
